Widely regarded as the most beautiful book in the world, The Book of Kells has been revered by writers, artists, and craftsmen for centuries. The ornately illustrated manuscript was created around AD 800 by Celtic monks who were skilled in the art of illumination. They employed a style known as Insular art which was characterised by the use of intricate, spiralling designs (the likes of which can be seen in calligraphy and many aspects of modern art). Between the book’s hallowed covers lie the four gospels of the Bible in Latin, adorned by colourful illustrations.
