Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church.
Together with Ambrose, Augustine of Hippo and Jerome he is one of the four key Doctors (from the Latin docere, to teach or instruct) of the Western Church.
Gregory is renowned for his reform of Church discipline and liturgical practices.
In his preaching he applied the Gospel to the needs of his listeners.
He sent Augustine of Canterbury to evangelise the English.
